Video of the Week - Killing Us Softly 4

Every Monday Say NO - UNiTE’s YouTube channel will feature a video on ending violence against women recommended by Say NO supporters. Visitors are encouraged to engage in an open discussion on the featured video or topic at hand by posting comments on our channel (see below).

Say NO — UNiTE’s Video of the Week (20- 26 February 2012) is Killing Us Softly 4 — an updated version of Jean Kilbourne’s pioneering Killing Us Softly series. The video demonstrates how advertising promotes distorted, sexist ideals of femininity and reinforces damaging gender stereotypes. Jean Kilbourne, Ed.D. is internationally recognized for her groundbreaking work on the image of women in advertising and for her critical studies of alcohol and tobacco advertising. In the late 1960s she began to explore the connection between advertising and several public health issues, including violence against women, eating disorders, and addiction, and launched a movement to promote media literacy as a way to prevent these problems.
