I don’t know if this is going to make any sense… but here’s my rant. [Warning: sensitive topics discussed below]
Warning: sensitive topics below.
So here’s the thing: rape makes me fucking sick. I don’t know how to fully express what I mean by this. Understand that I’m a male and have never been raped, and so I don’t have to deal with PTSD or anything of the like—but far too many people do. Rape, and more specifically our culture’s attitude towards rape, is just fucking despicable. How can guys sit around and laugh openly at rape jokes? Do they not realize how fucking disgusting what they’re saying really is? I watch fucking Family Guy, one of the most offensive shows out there, and I still find that when people discuss rape as if it were a joke that I just want to smack them across the face and say “DO YOU REALIZE WHAT RAPE IS!? CAN YOU IMAGINE IT? CAN YOU IMAGINE THE EFFECTS IT HAS ONE THE VICTIMS?” It’s just not okay, people. I don’t give a fuck if you’re joking around, rape is no joke.
And that’s just one small piece. Our society actually shames victims; it makes them feel like they are to be blamed for what happened to them. Can you fucking believe that? Imagine if that applied for other crimes. “Oh your store just got robbed? That’s what you deserve for advertising such low prices, slut.” or “Oh your mother was just murdered? That’s what that whore gets for leaving his neck out there just asking to be cut.” OBVIOUSLY THAT DOESN’T FUCKING WORK so why is that attitude applied to rape? I don’t give a shit if she was stark naked with a big glowing neon sign that said “Fuck Me,” you are not allowed to have sex with her unless she give her SOBER permission. Yes, that means that girl who is too drunk to walk is probably too drunk to have sex with, since she may not remember her consent in the morning—and then look, your a rapist. And you don’t want to be a rapist, right?
This rape culture of victim-blaming has far reaching effects that some people don’t realize. Hypothetically, say you just got raped: Do you go to the police and report it? Have a rape kit done? Your logical mind says, “Yes, of course,” but you don’t get your logical mind after suffering the severe trauma that is rape. You get the culturally-instilled mind that tells you it may have been your fault or that reporting it won’t do any good or any other number of completely untrue things our society has pounded into your brain. And because of how we treat victims, we’re actually less likely to catch rapists. So yes, by saying that “slutty girl” deserved to be raped, you are actually letting rapists run free. See, if women are less likely to report rapes, then rapists are less likely to be caught. In fact, most rapists are free. Can you believe that? Seriously. Think about that shit. Rapists are out there in broad daylight. What if a victim were to run into their rapist? That’s likely, since most rapists are someone the victim new beforehand. Try to even fathom a tiny portion of the disgust, horror, and terrible memories and terrors that would bring back.
*Anyone sensitive to rape discussion—even if you’ve made it this far—please skip this paragraph specifically because it will be very descriptive.* Men, I’m talking to you specifically. Imagine another man, much bigger and stronger than you, one day gets control over you and rapes you in the ass. As a result you feel less manly, and your afraid your friends will call you a pussy, so you don’t report it. Again, this is societal conditioning overriding logic. Because you don’t report it, your rapist goes free. You have nightmares of him every night, and when you think you see someone who looks like him your heart temporarily stops and you start shaking and can’t breath. But he is free, and out there. You may run into him at a grocery story, or at the mall. Who knows? But he’s out there, and you will never be prepared for the vivid terrors and memories when you see him. This is true for men, women, and everything in-between. Anyone can be a victim of rape and the effects can be devastating, even diagnosable as PTSD. Yeah, fucking Post Traumatic Stress Disorder like survivors of war who see people die and get tortured, that bad!
We need to stop with the rape culture and victim-shaming. If you are a victim, you already know how heartless our society is; if you are not a victim, I hope you feel the same disgust that I feel, because the more people who realize how terrible it really is, the sooner we can change things.
We should encourage people to come forward after being raped so that a rape kit can be done and the rapist prosecuted. If I ever become rich I will put motherfucking commercials on the TV telling people what to do in case of rape and who to call or contact and ensure them that we will not judge them. Maybe I can start some sort of anti-rape organization one day, or contribute largely to RAINN. (Rape Abuse Incest National Network)
We need to, as a society, change our views on rape. Only then can we actually stop rape before it happens by enlightening would-be rapists and helping those who have been raped by encouraging them to come forward without fear.
Another thing: Men can be raped too. So don’t be a fucking insensitive asshole to other dudes about shit like that. It fucking happens.
It just pains me to know that this is the world we live in. For every rape victim out there, my heart goes out to you. I am fighting for a world in which you don’t have to be ashamed, and where help is readily available to you. I cannot ever fully comprehend what you have gone through, but I know that you are a strong person for surviving it. You are amazing no matter what has happened to you. I am fighting for a world where rapists don’t walk free and where everyone can feel safe no matter where they go.
One final angry-rant… fuck you rapists. Fuck you for the damage you have done that will likely be permanent. I wish a hell existed just so that you could go there and burn for fucking eternity. You don’t deserve to be out in the streets, to have children or a wife, or to even breathe. You don’t deserve happiness or joy or laughter. You deserve to be shit on by the devil himself for ever and ever.
If you are a victim of rape or any form of sexual assault, I love you. I may not know you, but my thoughts, hope, and love are all with you. One day we will change society and rape will no longer be a problem, but until then we must continue to fight for positive change.
That is all.
