‘Fat’ is usually the first insult a girl throws at another girl when she wants to hurt her.

I mean, is ‘fat’ really the worst thing a human being can be? Is ‘fat’ worse than ‘vindictive’, ‘jealous’, ‘shallow’, ‘vain’, ‘boring’ or ‘cruel’? Not to me; but then, you might retort, what do I know about the pressure to be skinny? I’m not in the business of being judged on my looks, what with being a writer and earning my living by using my brain…

I went to the British Book Awards that evening. After the award ceremony I bumped into a woman I hadn’t seen for nearly three years. The first thing she said to me? ‘You’ve lost a lot of weight since the last time I saw you!’

‘Well,’ I said, slightly nonplussed, ‘the last time you saw me I’d just had a baby.’

What I felt like saying was, ‘I’ve produced my third child and my sixth novel since I last saw you. Aren’t either of those things more important, more interesting, than my size?’ But no – my waist looked smaller! Forget the kid and the book: finally, something to celebrate!

I’ve got two daughters who will have to make their way in this skinny-obsessed world, and it worries me, because I don’t want them to be empty-headed, self-obsessed, emaciated clones; I’d rather they were independent, interesting, idealistic, kind, opinionated, original, funny – a thousand things, before ‘thin’. And frankly, I’d rather they didn’t give a gust of stinking chihuahua flatulence whether the woman standing next to them has fleshier knees than they do. Let my girls be Hermiones, rather than Pansy Parkinsons.

A Land Without Guns: How Japan Has Virtually Eliminated Shooting Deaths

In 2008, the U.S. had over 12 thousand firearm-related homicides. All of Japan experienced only 11, fewer than were killed at the Aurora shooting alone. And that was a big year: 2006 saw an astounding two, and when that number jumped to 22 in 2007, it became a national scandal. For each non-suicide, gun-related death in Japan, there are over 50 Americans killed by accidental discharge of a firearm.

HEY GUYS

And remind your gun nut friends that the third word of the Second Amendment is “REGULATED.” No one’s trying to ban all guns in the US. We just want better mental health checks and background checks, and maybe for citizens to not have assault rifles. Not the same as banning anything.

“Mitt Romney was born on third base and spent his entire life thinking he hit a triple.”

Brilliant.

And then there’s this: “I don’t do cowering.” - Barack Obama - June 26, 2008

Full Context:

WENNER:
There is little doubt that you are going to be “Swift boated” in some way during the campaign and that we are all once again going to be hit with the politics of fear. How do you deal with that? In the past, Democrats have cowered in front of that.
OBAMA:
Yeah, I don’t do cowering. You have to respond forcefully, quickly and truthfully to attacks. So far, we’ve held up pretty well.

I side-eye the hell out of “female sex-positive” men.

fuckyeahsexpositivity:

captainhawkins:

Like a lot of them claim to be down with anti-slut shaming and stuff, but then when they get one whiff of a girl abstaining from sex for whatever personal reason they jump down her throat and pull that “sex is natural and a biological function” card or say she’s repressing herself. I’ve even seen other so-called sex-positive women take some really insensitive stances when it comes down to what a woman wants to do with her sex life, such as telling girls that don’t masturbate that they’re going to develop all these bullshit health problems.

Newsflash: You are shaming another person into feeling they should masturbate when they obviously don’t want to.

They all fail to realize that a person’s sexuality shouldn’t be determined by what makes other people happy.

Basically they’ll shit on you if they think your choices regarding sex are too “prude” for them to support.

They’re right up there with the Nice Guys (TM) on my list of secret assholes.

Abstaining from sex =/= sex negative. It’s a personal choice and it’s none of anyone else’s fucking business how a person decides to act on their sexuality in any way as long as it’s not hurting or oppressing anyone. How is that so hard to get?

They can get on the list with the “I like girls who don’t wear makeup” assholes. Making any sort of feminism about you, Mr. White Heterosexual Cis Man, isn’t true feminism.

  1. Trans people exist, are not ugly, are the gender they say they are, need support and respect, are human beings, aren’t your fetish objects or porn category, and it’s okay to be trans.
  2. Porn can be really oppressive, and healthier (and funnier and better) sources of porn exist…

Gamers get hella uncomfortable over male sexuality too. Can you imagine a “good male character who just happens to be wearing sexually exploitative outfits because he’s ok with his masculinity?” Constantly has the camera pan lovingly over his asscrack and firm glutes, and big ole dangly ballsack that is totes sweaty from all this MMA and soldiering. Time to hit the showers, and do you, personally, think it’s ok to have a long slow pan up the dude’s package (indiscreetly hidden in a jock of course), to his chiseled physique and erect nipples (pierced). He’s not even a Bond-esque confident man, he’s basically a weird Bowie caricature that’s constantly having near-dickslips in every single cinematic as the completely nonsexualized female characters do their business of being gruff and shooting dudes and advancing the plot. Finally, at the end he falls in love (out of nowhere) and/or is killed by the big baddie.

Finally one that doesn’t make it sound like it’s the woman’s responsibility to not get raped.

Perfect!

I still don’t understand what’s wrong with teaching women to protect themselves.
Why can’t we do both? Why can’t we teach men not to rape and teach women how to take precautions? Some nutballs aren’t gonna listen to reason. Even if rape culture died tomorrow and all the right-thinking men and women in this world became campaigners against rape, there would still be some sick pervert rapist out there.
It’s not a woman’s responsibility to not get raped, but it is a reality of the world we live in that a woman has to do things like lock her door and carry a whistle and not ride with strangers and not go out at night.
It sucks, but that’s the situation on the ground right now.

There’s nothing wrong with teaching women to protect themselves. But that’s all we do, which is the point of this post. We don’t teach men not to rape, we only teach women how to avoid getting raped.

Is there a way to teach men not to rape, beyond letting them know that intoxicated people cannot give consent? If a man is a rapist, he’s not an entirely rational being. If he wants to rape, he’s going to. He doesn’t care about his victim’s feelings.
I just have my doubts that such campaigns could prevent rape. I can see them changing society to be more on the side of the victim instead of blaming them, but I really can’t see anyway to stop rapists.

what you fail to see is that there are multiple kinds of rapists. some are terrible, horrible, fucked up people who know they are raping and that it’s wrong and do it anywhere.then there are rapists who feel like what they’re doing is okay because society and rape culture side with them. rape jokes and slut-shaming make them feel like it’s okay to rape. yes, they’re fucked up, but our society encourages them, and that’s what this graphic aims to shut down.then there’s also the rapist who doesn’t know he’s a rapist. he had sex with a girl who was too intoxicated to consent and just thinks it was drunk sex. she is traumatized now and won’t say anything, so he goes off thinking he just got lucky. THAT is fucked up and we need to clarify for all of society that too drunk to make a decision equals too drunk to have sex.so teaching men not to rape wont end all rape, because there are clearly those who wont stop no matter what. but a large portion of rapists can be stopped before they ever do anything if we just change the way society views rape.nothing will get better until we end rape culture. that must be a goal of all of us.

Slut gets thrown at women who are expressive about wanting to have sex. Fag is used against men who don’t constantly display a desire to have sex. In many ways, a woman is a slut if she acts too much like a man is supposed to and a man is a fag if he acts like a woman is supposed to. And both terms are used to shame people into compliance with gender rules, no matter how unrealistic or inauthentic they are.

The Doll Test.  They redo this every so often, and the results remain the same.  The person who screams a slur at you is an obvious threat, but when the whole world keeps telling you that you don’t matter, and showing you that you don’t matter, that’s the poison that sinks in.

One of the best tricks is getting people to believe the battle is on a single front - “Oh this doesn’t matter because X matters more” - actually it all matters- day to day survival, food and health care matters, legal rights, protection and laws matter, media narratives that inform how people act matter, your personal choices and way of thinking matters.

I’ll say it far less elegantly: Fuck your white fuckery.

All of your bullshit we call out matters. Your stupid fucking Disney movies, your shitty magazine and your crappy TV shows.

All of that nonsense makes beautiful brown girls like this hate themselves.

So fuck you very much, we’re gonna keep on at it until it drives you crazy too

Here’s what Romney doesn’t understand: Nobody cares that Mitt Romney is rich. It’s Romney’s inability to understand the institutional advantage that he gains from the government’s tax code largesse. That’s a little offensive to people, especially considering Romney’s view on anyone else who looks to the government for things like, I don’t know, food and medicine.
